Deshaun Watson donates first paycheck to cafeteria employees

Houston Texans rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson got a big payday with his first NFL game check, but then gave it to three female NRG Stadium food service workers who lost everything during Hurricane Harvey. "I wanted to give my first game check to y'all to help y'all out, some type of way," Watson told the workers. Watson, who has a base salary of $465,000, donated a check for $27,353. Watson has been on the receiving end of a similar kindness in the past, as he and his family were once recipients of a house built by Habitat for Humanity.

Hi Melvyn,

Thanks for your message.

My source for the Birchland Park 1959 graduation is two newspaper articles. Attachment 1 is an article from the Springfield Union, June 5, 1959. It mentions 140 will graduate. Attachment 2 is an article from the Springfield Union, June 6, 1959, which says 141 graduated. So, 141 must be the correct number.

There is no newspaper article from June 1962 mentioning the number of ELHS graduates, but I believe I got the number of 134 graduates from the principal's secretary at ELHS, who counted the number in the commencement program.

I find it very interesting that there were apparently 134 graduates but only 95 listed as seniors in the 1962 yearbook. The only high schools in Springfield that East Longmeadow High School students attended in 1962, that I'm aware of, were Cathedral and Trade. What school did you graduate from?

All the best,

Yes...I refer to the 9th graders (Class of '59) who graduated from Birchland Park Jr HS in June 1959.
What is your source for 140 students?

Your website site cites an interesting note: 400 East Longmeadow pupils attending Springfield schools. On Sept. 25, 1959, figures were released for high school students in grades ten through twelve attending Springfield schools. "This number shows 153 at Technical, 105 at Classical, 78 at Commerce, 42 at Trade, and some at Cathedral."

The EL High School library's oldest yearbook is for 1962. They don't have one for 1961. The 1962 book lists 95 students as Seniors. So approx 45 students graduated from high school elsewhere (like me!)

Richard Hagopian nudged my interest in this 1959 "event" as we recently re-connected via FB. What a memory he has!

Hi Melvyn,

I presume the class of '59 to which you are referring is the one that graduated at Birchland Park Junior High School in June 1959. Is this correct? If so, I only know there were 140 in that graduating class, but I do not have a list of names.

If you wish to know the names, I would contact the East Longmeadow Public Schools superindentent's office and see if they may have access to a list. Their phone number is 413-525-5450.

Please call me at home if I may be of any further assistance.

As you know, my Class of 1959 (9th graders) had to enroll at Springfield for 10th grade as E.L. HS was not ready until Sep 7th 1960. Can you provide a list of the Class of 1959 graduates? Many
