<a href="https://www.thejc.com/lifestyle/family/shabbat-dinners-helped-me-heal-1.463094">The Shabbat dinners that my husband and I hosted at our home in North-West London had a languorous feel to them. With both my family and his living outside London, friends were our Friday-night family. I came to look forward to winding down after a long week, the lighting of candles atop gleaming chrome candlesticks (a wedding gift), and the relaxed laughter and banter around the table. We would all linger in our chairs until late into the night.</a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #272727; font-family: lexia, sans-serif; font-size: 20px; margin-bottom: 1.25rem; max-width: 56.25rem; padding: 0px;">
<a href="https://www.thejc.com/lifestyle/family/shabbat-dinners-helped-me-heal-1.463094">Having not been brought up within a religious tradition (my single mother’s Judaism had been more about the culture than about shul-going), as a newlywed, I enjoyed both hosting and attending Shabbat dinners in the same way that I embraced Jewish holidays: with a sprinkling of curiosity and a large spoonful of enthusiasm.</a></div>

<br />Many TV pundits are telling viewers not to worry about the government’s intrusion into possible lawyer/client privileged communications between President Trump and his lawyer, since prosecutors won’t get to see or use any privileged material. This is because prosecutors and FBI agents create firewalls and taint teams to preclude privileged information from being used against the client in a criminal case. But that analysis completely misses the point and ignores the distinction between the Fifth Amendment on the one hand, and the Fourth and Sixth Amendments on the other.<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;"><br /></span>Melvyn Douglasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12956936440794196405noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2281448223781214096.post-68470480198055838182018-01-10T15:49:00.000-06:002018-01-10T15:49:57.362-06:00Catherine Deneuve says men should be 'free to hit on' women<span style="background-color: white; color: #767676; font-family: "Guardian Egyptian Web", "Guardian Text Egyptian Web", Georgia, serif; font-size: 18px; font-variant-ligatures: common-ligatures;"><a href="https://www.theguardian.com/film/2018/jan/09/catherine-deneuve-men-should-be-free-hit-on-women-harvey-weinstein-scandal">French actor signs open letter that claims ‘witch-hunt’ in wake of Harvey Weinstein scandal poses threat to sexual freedom</a></span>Melvyn Douglasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12956936440794196405noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2281448223781214096.post-2911988289651015792017-11-01T18:14:00.001-05:002017-11-01T18:14:47.678-05:00Who Won the Reformation?by <a class="byline-column-link" href="https://www.nytimes.com/column/ross-douthat" style="color: black; font-family: franklin-normal-700, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 0.9375rem; font-weight: 700; letter-spacing: 0.02em; margin-right: 15px; text-decoration-line: none; text-transform: capitalize;">Ross Douthat</a><span style="color: #888888; font-family: franklin-normal-700, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 0.9375rem; font-weight: 700; letter-spacing: 0.02em;"> </span><time class="dateline" content="2017-11-01T13:26:50-04:00" datetime="2017-11-01T13:26:50-04:00" itemprop="dateModified" style="font-family: franklin-normal-500, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 0.6875rem; letter-spacing: 0.02em; line-height: 0.6875rem; margin-left: 0px; white-space: nowrap;">NOV. 1, 2017</time><br />

Hi Melvyn,<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Thanks for your message.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My source for the Birchland Park 1959 graduation is two newspaper articles. Attachment 1 is an article from the Springfield Union, June 5, 1959. It mentions 140 will graduate. Attachment 2 is an article from the Springfield Union, June 6, 1959, which says 141 graduated. So, 141 must be the correct number.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There is no newspaper article from June 1962 mentioning the number of ELHS graduates, but I believe I got the number of 134 graduates from the principal's secretary at ELHS, who counted the number in the commencement program. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I find it very interesting that there were apparently 134 graduates but only 95 listed as seniors in the 1962 yearbook. The only high schools in Springfield that East Longmeadow High School students attended in 1962, that I'm aware of, were Cathedral and Trade. What school did you graduate from?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
All the best,</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

Yes...I refer to the 9th graders (Class of '59) who graduated from Birchland Park Jr HS in June 1959.<br />
<div>
What is your source for 140 students?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Your website site cites an interesting note: <i><span style="color: rgb(0 , 0 , 0); font-family: "georgia"; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">400 East Longmeadow pupils attending Springfield schools. </span></i><i style="color: black; font-family: Georgia; white-space: pre-wrap;">On Sept. 25, 1959, figures were released for high school students in grades ten through twelve attending Springfield schools. "This number shows 153 at Technical, 105 at Classical, 78 at Commerce, 42 at Trade, and some at Cathedral."</i></div>
<div>
<i style="color: black; font-family: Georgia; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></i></div>
<div>
<span style="color: black; font-family: "georgia";"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">The EL High School library's oldest yearbook is for 1962. They don't have one for 1961. The 1962 book lists 95 students as Seniors. So approx 45 students graduated from high school elsewhere (like me!)</span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: black; font-family: "georgia";"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></span></div>

<span style="color: black; font-family: "georgia";"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Richard Hagopian nudged my interest in this 1959 "event" as we recently re-connected via FB. What a memory he has!</span></span></div>

Hi Melvyn,<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I presume the class of '59 to which you are referring is the one that graduated at Birchland Park Junior High School in June 1959. Is this correct? If so, I only know there were 140 in that graduating class, but I do not have a list of names.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you wish to know the names, I would contact the East Longmeadow Public Schools superindentent's office and see if they may have access to a list. Their phone number is <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null">413-525-5450</a>.</div>
<div>

<div>
Please call me at home if I may be of any further assistance.</div>

Sincerely,</div>
